IAB strongly condemns the murder of mexican journalist Josué Martínez Contreras
The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) strongly condemns the murder of Mexican journalist Josué Martínez Contreras, director of Noticias San Martín Texmelucan, in the state of Puebla. He was shot and killed inside his home in the presence of his son and mother.
IAB expresses its profound dismay over this crime and conveys its solidarity with the journalist's family, his colleagues, and the entire Mexican journalism community.
IAB urges the competent Mexican authorities to conduct an immediate, thorough, independent, and impartial investigation to identify and bring to justice both the perpetrators and the masterminds behind this crime, considering the victim's journalistic work as a primary line of investigation.
IAB observes with deep concern the continuing violence against journalists and media outlets in Mexico, one of the world's most dangerous countries for the practice of journalism. It reiterates that the State has the responsibility to adopt effective measures to prevent these crimes, strengthen the protection of journalists and media organizations, and firmly confront the violence and impunity that continue to seriously undermine Freedom of Expression.
IAB reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the defense of Freedom of Expression and Freedom of the Press throughout the Americas and calls for decisive action to ensure that no journalist ever again loses his or her life for carrying out the vital work of informing the public.
