IAB condemns threats against O Globo journalist

The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) strongly condemns the threats and intimidation directed against journalist Malu Gaspar, of the media outlet O Globo.

These events took place in the context of the investigation involving former banker Daniel Vorcaro, who asked publicist Thiago Miranda to look into the journalist's private life, with the aim of silencing her following her reporting on the sale of Banco Master to Banco de Brasília (BRB).

Any attack on press freedom constitutes a serious harm to society as a whole, as it undermines the public's right to be informed. The Declaration of Principles on Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is unequivocal on this point: its Ninth Principle establishes that intimidation and threats against media workers violate individuals' fundamental rights and severely affect the exercise of freedom of expression, and provides that States are obligated to prevent and investigate such acts, punish those responsible, and ensure adequate reparation for victims.

In light of this principle, it is the unavoidable duty of the Brazilian State to adopt all measures necessary to guarantee the free exercise of journalism and the safety of journalists, in this case of Ms. Malu Gaspar. IAB urges the authorities to continue the investigation and to prosecute and sanction all those involved in these extremely serious acts.

IAB expresses its solidarity with journalist Malu Gaspar, with the media outlet O Globo, and with all Brazilian media professionals, and reaffirms its permanent commitment to the defense of freedom of expression and of the press in the Americas.
