The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) expresses its deep concern regarding reports of restrictions on the work of journalists and independent media in the areas affected by the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela.
IAB recalls that, in situations of disaster, the free flow of information and transparency are indispensable to protect human life and to ensure that humanitarian assistance reaches those most in need in a timely manner.
Accordingly, IAB urges the interim authorities of Venezuela to guarantee journalists and independent media free access to the affected areas, while also fully facilitating the work of rescue agencies, the international community, and civil society in search, rescue, and humanitarian assistance efforts.
While people remain missing or trapped beneath the rubble, every minute is critical. Every action must be directed exclusively toward saving lives and alleviating the suffering of the victims.
IAB reaffirms its solidarity with the Venezuelan people and with the country's broadcasters, and expresses its hope that international solidarity will contribute to Venezuela's prompt recovery.
