IAB strongly condemns the murder of journalist Mateo Pérez in Colombia
The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) condemns in the strongest possible terms the murder of Colombian journalist Mateo Pérez (24 years old), whose body was recovered in a rural area of the municipality of Briceño, Antioquia, after having been reported missing since May 5.
IAB expresses its deep consternation over this crime, which mourns Colombian journalism and constitutes an extremely serious violation of freedom of expression, the right to life, and society’s right to be informed.
IAB urges the competent authorities of Colombia to conduct an immediate, thorough, and independent investigation capable of identifying and prosecuting all material and intellectual perpetrators of this crime, and to ensure that these acts do not remain unpunished.
IAB expresses its solidarity with the family of journalist Mateo Pérez, with the Colombian journalistic community, and with all media professionals who continue to carry out their work in contexts of violence and risk.
IAB reaffirms its permanent commitment to the defense of freedom of expression and freedom of the press throughout the Americas.
