The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) informs its members and the international community that Grupo Salinas, which includes TV Azteca, has formally submitted a petition before the Inter-American Human Rights System, through the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, denouncing a situation of political persecution, administrative harassment, and undue pressure allegedly exerted by the Mexican State.
The complaint documents a pattern of criminalization of criticism, political use of fiscal authorities, interference with judicial independence, and practices aimed at intimidating and silencing those who exercise their right to free expression and participation in public debate.
IAB expresses its support for TV Azteca and underscores that the use of State power to stigmatize, pressure, or persecute media outlets constitutes a serious violation of freedom of expression and of the democratic principles enshrined in the American Convention on Human Rights.
IAB values recourse to international protection mechanisms as a legitimate avenue for the defense of the rule of law and reaffirms that freedom of the press, media pluralism, and the independence of media outlets are essential pillars of democracy.
IAB will continue to closely monitor the development of this case and reiterates its permanent commitment to the defense of freedom of expression in Mexico and throughout the Americas.
