The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) expresses its deep concern over the events that took place on December 9, 2025, in the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil, where journalists were expelled from the plenary session, the signal of the public broadcaster TV Câmara was interrupted, and normal journalistic coverage was impeded.
Such actions, both the direct obstruction of journalists' work and the interruption of official broadcasts, are incompatible with the principles enshrined in the Brazilian Constitution and with international standards on freedom of the press and the right to information. Restricting press access to the functioning of public institutions seriously undermines transparency, informational pluralism, and the public’s right to exercise democratic oversight.
The IAB firmly condemns these restrictions and expresses its solidarity with the journalists affected and with all media organizations fulfilling the essential mission of informing society. The IAB also urges that the facts be publicly investigated and responsibilities determined, so that acts of intimidation or censorship do not occur again.
Freedom of the press is an indispensable pillar of democracy.
