IAB condemns the murder of journalist Fernando Núñez in Peru

The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) strongly condemns the murder of Peruvian journalist Fernando Núñez, which occurred in the region of La Libertad while he was traveling on a motorcycle with his brother.

This atrocious crime adds to a troubling pattern of violence against journalists in various regions of the country, particularly in contexts marked by organized crime and insecurity, which places at risk the public’s right to be informed and severely undermines freedom of expression.

As stated in Principle No. 9 of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights’ Declaration of Principles, “The murder, kidnapping, intimidation, threats to social communicators, as well as the material destruction of communications media, violate the fundamental rights of individuals and strongly restrict freedom of expression. It is the duty of the State to prevent and investigate such occurrences, to punish their perpetrators, and to ensure victims receive adequate compensation.”

The IAB urges the Peruvian State to conduct a thorough, independent, and prompt investigation to identify and sanction the material and intellectual authors of this crime, and to adopt effective measures to protect journalists working in high-risk areas.

Attacking a journalist is an attack on democracy itself.

The IAB expresses its solidarity with the family of Fernando Núñez, his colleagues, and the journalistic community of Peru.
