The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) strongly condemns the attack that occurred in the city of Pasto, Colombia, where an explosive device was detonated in front of the facilities of RCN Radio, causing significant material damage to the building.

The IAB expresses its full solidarity with the directors, journalists, and staff of RCN Radio, and supports the statement issued by the National Media Association (ASOMEDIOS) in defense of freedom of expression.

As established in Principle No. 9 of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights’ Declaration of Principles: “The murder, kidnapping, intimidation, threats to social communicators, as well as the material destruction of communications media, violate the fundamental rights of individuals and strongly restrict freedom of expression. It is the duty of the State to prevent and investigate such occurrences, to punish their perpetrators, and to ensure victims receive adequate compensation.”

The IAB urges the Colombian authorities to conduct a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation to identify and sanction both the material and intellectual authors of the attack. Attacks against media outlets are direct attacks against freedom of expression and democracy.
