The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) expresses its concern over repeated statements by the Costa Rican executive branch insisting on reviewing radio and television concessions, which violates citizens' right to be properly informed and to freely express their opinions.
Reviewing, revoking, or imposing undue burdens on private radio and television stations, with the effect of limiting criticism and curbing public scrutiny, constitutes a restriction on freedom of expression.
Attacking or weakening radio, television, and the press not only contravenes the American Convention on Human Rights, but also erodes the very foundations of democracy.
The IAB reiterates its commitment to defending freedom of expression and free, private, and independent media.
The IAB also recognizes Costa Rica's democratic track record, which has made it a regional benchmark for freedom of expression and information, and urges the Costa Rican government to honor and strengthen that tradition.
