The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) strongly condemns the murder of journalist and photographer Salomón Ordóñez Miranda, founder of the digital media outlet Shalom Cuetzalan Producciones, which took place on June 23 in the community of Pahpatapan, State of Puebla, Mexico.
Ordóñez Miranda focused his reporting on community life and security issues, which makes it essential that his murder be thoroughly investigated, considering his journalistic work as a central line of inquiry.
IAB recalls that Mexico remains the most dangerous country on the continent to practice journalism, and reiterates that impunity perpetuates violence. Protecting journalists means protecting democracy. This new crime is a serious attack on freedom of expression and the public’s right to be informed.
IAB expresses its solidarity with the journalist’s family and colleagues, and urges the Mexican authorities, especially the Office of the Attorney General of the State of Puebla and the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes against Freedom of Expression (FEADLE), to clarify the facts, identify those responsible, and ensure swift and impartial justice.
